Indian philatelic history began with the introduction of paper postage in 1852, replacing the inconvenient copper tokens used since 1774. Inspired by England's Penny Postage, Sir Bartel Frere introduced Scinde Dawk stamps in 1852, which were later withdrawn in 1854 with the introduction of India’s first official postage stamps featuring Queen Victoria. Initially inscribed as India Postage, it changed to East India Postage in 1854 and reverted to India Postage in 1882, continuing until 1962, when it was replaced by भारत INDIA. British monarchs featured on stamps until India's independence in 1947, after which stamps depicted national symbols, beginning with the Ashoka Pillar, the Indian National Flag, and an Aircraft. Since then, India has issued over 3,000 stamps.
